Conversation With Amanda Chapel, Part II
Saturday, April 19th, 2008markdavidson: @amandachapel In social media, first you get the money. Then you get the power. When you get the power, then you get the women.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | No. In SM, 1st you get lots of friendZ; then you meet other geeks at conferences; then you wake up in your parents basement.
markdavidson: @amandachapel Clearly I’m deploying social media wrong then.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | …or letting your imagination get the best of you. The fraternity that has made money on social media is itty bitty.
markdavidson: @amandachapel I’m not in the fraternity and never will be.
markdavidson: @amandachapel Here’s the bottom line… Stop talking. Do something. Social media is just a tool. Having a hammer won’t build you a house.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | Yes. All the evangelizing and shilling makes any (underscore any) potential here impossible to recognize.
markdavidson: @amandachapel The fallacy you’ve been blurbing about is easy to recognize when one asks the question, “How do I monetize my fax machine?”
markdavidson: @amandachapel The people who are making money in social media are the people who are selling and leasing the fax equipment on slim margins.
markdavidson: @amandachapel One can also make some tidy money by showing people how to set up and operate their new fax machine. (You know who you are.)
markdavidson: @amandachapel But for the people who have paid for and set up their fax machine, I hope they have a business. Otherwise, it’s kinda useless.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | Your analogy re: who’s makin’ money is a good one. I say this: the levy broke and most now are looking to sell water.
Conversation with Amanda Chapel
Friday, April 18th, 2008This was my very first conversation with @amandachapel. She used to write a blog with Brian Connolly, Bruce Pilgrim, and a few other authors. (All of whom are listed on her blog at Strumpette.com.) Howard Kurtz from The Washington Post wrote a nice article about her back in 2006. You can also read more about Amanda Chapel in her Bio.
A lot of people think Amanda Chapel is a fictional character and is ghost written by Brian Connolly. In reality, Amanda Chapel actually exists. Everything you read on her site is exactly, what it is. I enjoy my conversations with Amanda. She has a wealth of knowledge and I have a lot of respect for her. I also think it’s funny that so many people are either scared to engage her or get angry when she delivers the truth with a brute force that can only come from having decades of real-world PR experience.
I am also amused by how many people try to console their bruised egos by reassuring themselves with the belief that she’s a fictional character. Even my own PR person has warned me repeatedly not to align myself with her.
Conversing with Amanda Chapel reminds me of testing for a black belt. To advance to the next level, one has to test against the master. On Twitter, she is the ranking master of PR. Don’t believe me? Look at her popularity on Twitter. How many bloggers have made The Washington Post?
She creates a buzz. People are constantly talking about her. She’s edgy, witty, and unique. Does she have a team behind her? Of course she does. That’s no secret. It’s right there on her blog page.
I think that many people miss the subtlety of her satire. That’s a shame because there is a lot to learn from her. Just bring your sense of humor with you. Otherwise, she’ll probably pummel you.
markdavidson: @amandachapel I’m trying to read your About page on screen. Would you mind adjusting your column to only about 60 words per line? Thanks.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | Anything else? Would you like the words in another color? Font okay?
markdavidson: @amandachapel Also, a mobile version of your site would be nice. I’d like to read it on my Treo when I’m out of the office. Thanks again.
markdavidson: @amandachapel It’s a nicely designed blog for the most part. Also, I enjoy your writing and your blurbs here on Twitter. I could RSS it…
amandachapel: @markdavidson | Fro the record, I retired from Strumpette 4 or 5 months ago.
markdavidson: @amandachapel So Brian and Bruce are now working the pole? I find that strangely erotic in a Maplethorpe kind of way… wait. WHAT?
markdavidson: @amandachapel Do you have a new blog? I think frotherecord.com would be good domain name. We need more a lot more fro in social media.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | I understand the site is on hold now. Brian says he cannot make up stuff more silly than Edelman’s authentic claim.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | FOR the record, I retired from Strumpette 4 or 5 months ago
markdavidson: @amandachapel Edelman has at least one good person who I am aware of, so not every move they make is a mistake. Still need more fro though.
amandachapel: @markdavidson | You do know you have a buger on your nose. Been meaning to say something all day. ![]()
markdavidson: @amandachapel lol. That’s not a booger! That’s my face! ![]()
amandachapel: @markdavidson | You do know you have a booger on your nose. Been meaning to say something all day. ![]()
markdavidson: @amandachapel It like your posts better before you corrected them. This thread needs more fro damnit!
[Austrian Accent] I’ll be back!
Thursday, April 17th, 2008The upgrade to WordPress 2.5 broke (borked) something in TwitterStars.com. I’ve done about 20 2.5 upgrades and only my personal site was negatively impacted…
I will fix it and then return. Soon. I promise. ![]()

Stumble it!
