Discussion With Robert Scoble About DM
Sunday, March 16th, 2008Robert Scoble and I have different views about the value of Twitter Direct Messages, private messages, and SMS. What’s practical and effective for me, is impractical and ineffective for him.
I believe that if Robert were to connect SMS messaging to his social networking messages, because of his massive following and popularity, he would very quickly become bombarded with messages and unable to respond appropriately. With email, he can respond to his messages, schedule his day, and still have a life.
I agree with Robert about Gmail. It’s a wonderful tool. He can filter, parse, and re-direct email in a way that is highly effective. Robert also mentioned to me that he has developed carpal tunnel from his previous use of SMS. I have little doubt of this. He’s very popular in social media and was also very gracious for taking the time to respond to me.
Scobleizer I hate Twitter Direct Messages. I hate Facebook messages. Why? Cause email is so much more flexible. I hate email too, but less than these.
mark1davidson @Scobleizer Have you considered using phone Text Messages? AIM, Twitter DM, and Yahoo can all forward SMS messages to your cell/smart phone.
mark1davidson @Scobleizer With new devices such as the Blackberry, iPhone, Treo, and the Nokia N95, you are always instantly in touch with the blog-geist!
Scobleizer @mark1davidson my iPhone gets Gmail. I love Gmail. So much better for doing stuff like this than private messages on social networks.
mark1davidson @Scobleizer My Treo and Nokia Internet Tablet also get Gmail. All my domains use Gmail as a gateway. Still, DMs over SMS, are even better.
mark1davidson @Scobleizer I’m a firm believer in the value of instant communication. DM over SMS allows people to easily contact me when and as they like.
Scobleizer @mark1davidson I +HATE+ SMS. I don’t use a phone with a QWERTY keyboard, so it’s VERY difficult to answer back.
mark1davidson My entire life is conducted over SMS. People are able to stay in touch with me instantly throughout the day with DMs over SMS.
