Who Was markdavidson’s Internet Girlfriend?

The server at twitter.com is a capricious bitch.

As I post this, Twitter is down again and I need access to it to finish the blog post I had started a few days ago. In many ways, Twitter is like an abusive lover. Why do I stay? I love her, man. That’s why.

I mean to blog more on TwitterStars.com, I really do. It’s just sometimes tough because I get so wrapped up in posting on Twitter that I forget to come back to posting on the blog. I think the solution for me is to keep the blog open on my laptop screen and Twitter open on my external monitor… or perhaps even on the computer to my immediate right; anything with a spare keyboard and screen.

I know a lot of people love dual monitors. I’ve always been a bigger fan of multiple computers with a shared drive. There’s something about having the extra keyboard in addition to the extra screen that really works for me. I think this is why I’ve defaulted to my laptop setup. Whether I am at work or home, I put my laptop on a stand and plug in an external Samsung SyncMaster and a Microsoft keyboard and mouse. It’s like having two computers sitting side-by-side. Depending on what I’m working on, I typically I like to work with 4 computers at the same time.

I’m trying this out now for the first time and it seems to be working quite well. I am able to post on Twitter and still work on this blog entry. Maybe now I can finish up the Twitter Stars entry that I seem to keep getting distracted away from!

My intention was to create a theme for Twitter Stars today but I’ve been enjoying my taking a lazy and peaceful afternoon for myself.

I’ve been getting a lot of positive response through DM, on Twitter, and on AIM. I appreciate all the kind words. The Twitter community is incredible. I’ve been online since 1983 and I’ve never participated in such a warm, genuinely kind, and thought-provoking community. To me, Twitter is the best of everything the internet had ever claimed itself to be.

That is, when she’s talking to me.

Why Twitter Will Go Mainstream Versus My Bad Grammar

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

I left a comment on Mapping the Web. At the time I had left my comment, I was convinced that I was being brilliant and insightful. In reality I was destroying the English language. Below, I will re-post my comment but this time, I will proof my post before hitting the submit button. I am notoriously lazy when it comes to proofing my drafts before posting.

Here is what I had meant to write:

Twitter is to Web 2.0 as Amazon is to Web 1.0.

The dedicated and hard working team at Twitter should continue to do exactly what they are doing.

The trend of micro-blogging will not fall off. Unlike traditional blogging, the barrier to entry on Twitter is incredibly low. The time needed to master Twitter is incredibly low. The time needed to participate in Twitter is incredibly low.

How people use Twitter is incredibly varied and the Twitter-publishing system has proven to be surprisingly flexible. Like all great applications, Twitter is simple enough for anyone to start using immediately and deep enough to allow the l337erati to broadcast their ideas and message to the internet masses in a way that no other Web 2.0 application currently delivers. Twitter allows for freedom of expression and personal style.

Once the team solves the current scalability issues, Twitter will go mainstream. Micro-blogging as a medium is here to stay. At its very minimum, micro-blogging is the new Usenet. At its full potential, micro-blogging is the new SMS, IM, and email all rolled into one. Twitter is a new-media hub.

Please feel free to comment in my comments section below or to comment directly to the original Mapping the Web article. If you don’t believe Twitter has real ultimate staying power you better get a life right now or Biz Stone will chop your head off!!! It’s an easy choice, if you ask me.

Moments after I published this article, @status_girl came to my rescue!: @markdavidson: You have a grammatical error in the 2nd last sentence of your post lol (don’t typed twice in a row). Hows that for irony? :D

Within moments, the Twitter community kicked in and helped me to look more better good in print! Thank you @status_girl!
